ALANIS MORISSETTE - SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is the fourth album by singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette, originally released in 1998. After the massive success of Jagged Little Pill (1995), Morissette was considered one of the biggest music stars in the world, and many fans anxiously awaited a follow-up album. A dark and wandering album, the mystery of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie began on its cover, with an image of Alanis’s mouth while laughing and a text printed over that image that refers to The Eight Precepts of Buddhism.

WU-TANG CLAN - THE W (ON CLEAR VINYL)

The W is the third studio album by the world’s baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit “Gravel Pit”, the album was certified Platinum a few months later.

After their 1997 album Wu-Tang Forever and several solo projects, 'The W' has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach (the group’s massive debut Enter The Wu-Tang comes to mind) works so well because it puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game.

The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.

Grand Declaration of War is the second full-length studio album by Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, released through Necropolis Records, on 16 May 2000.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS - APOLLO 18

Apollo 18 is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock duo They Might Be Giants. It was released in 1992 through Elektra Records and named after the Apollo missions, the last of which to be completed was Apollo 17. The album was also associated with International Space Year, for which They Might Be Giants were declared the official "musical ambassadors".

The album marked the first conscious effort by John Linnell and John Flansburgh to branch out of their early sound, opting for more traditional rock rhythms and fuller arrangements. The duo adopted a backing band with live drums during the supporting tour. It was their last album recorded as a duo, and the band expanded to include a regular rhythm guitarist, bass player, and saxophone player for their subsequent releases. The album generated three singles, "The Statue Got Me High", "The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)" and "I Palindrome I". Apollo 18 also includes the "Fingertips" suite, a series of twenty-one songs, each under thirty seconds long. This concept was later recycled for the band's sixteenth album, Nanobots, which contains twenty-five songs, nine of which run under one minute each.

Barclay James Harvest - North

The album (featuring all new material) draws on the fine musical heritage of Barclay James Harvest whilst bringing the BJH legacy up to date with expansive compositions and thoughtful lyrics. The band’s roots in rural north-west England are explored on the album’s title track, along with another extended piece, ‘On Leave’. The album also includes the recent digital single ‘Unreservedly Yours’ and ‘Ancient Waves’, a song performed live in more recent times.

"North” continues the Barclay James Harvest story and is the strongest work to emerge from the band in many years, a true group effort by John Lees, Craig Fletcher, Jez Smith and Kevin Whitehead. The album release is supported by an extended UK tour by the band in November 2013.

The gatefold 180g vinyl edition is strictly limited.

upcoming releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

CREAM - ROYAL ALBERT HALL 2005

Iconic Classic Rock heroes Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker teamed up in 2005 for a short string of Cream reunion shows in the UK's finest concert hall, Royal Albert Hall. After their late '60s split, the band had not been playing together, except for a one-off 1993 gig at their induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Cream had not only remained a legendary band, but at the time it seemed extremely unlikely that they would ever play live again. Therefore these live recordings are a heaven's send to Rock fans all over the world, those who are eager to hear these monsters of Rock back in action. And many fans and critics agreed that the band sounded better than before. A worthy coda to their brief but impactful career.

BUDDY MILES - THEM CHANGES

Them Changes is the 1970 release by American Rock and Funk drummer, vocalist, composer and producer Buddy Miles. He was a founding member of The Electric Flag (1967), a member of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys (1969-1970), founder and leader of the Buddy Miles Express and later, the Buddy Miles Band. In addition to Jimi Hendrix, Miles played and recorded with Carlos Santana, Mike Bloomfield and others.

According to critics Them Changes is one of the great lost treasures of Soul inspired Rock music. The album stayed on the charts for more than a year and the title track became Miles' signature song. With this album Miles not only proved himself to be a great interpreter of songs of others, but also demonstrated his ability to write solid material on his own.

MFSB - LOVE IS THE MESSAGE

Love Is The Message (1975) is the second album released by Philadelphia International Records house band MFSB, and widely regarded as one of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's shining moments. The album serves as a landmark LP for Philadelphia's mid-'70s Soul movement. The album hit the 4th spot in the Billboard Album Top 200, and topped the  Billboard Top Soul LPs Charts for quite some time.

This Grammy Award winning album includes the number one hit "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" featuring The Three Degrees. The song became the theme song for the immensely popular television show Soul Train, the dance show that still defines the Disco era. The song "Love Is The Message" would go on to be an enormous underground hit in New York's late-'70s disco scene, championed by influential DJs such as Larry Levan. In addition, the album also features the orchestra's take on "Touch Me In The Morning", a song popularized by Diana Ross that was another proto-disco classic.

FOUR TOPS - FOUR TOPS

The Four Tops were among a number of groups, including The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, and The Supremes, who established the Motown Sound around the world during the 1960s. The group was the main male vocal group for the highly successful songwriting and production team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, who crafted a stream of hit singles on Motown. Their immaculate four-part harmonies gave voice to many of Motown's most enduring songs.

Their self-titled album (1964) included the singles "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Ask the Lonely". You'd be hard pressed to find two better singles on a debut album, both being the cornerstones of Four Tops. A debut to remember.  On 180 gram audiophile vinyl

MASTODON: Debut LP Remission to See Deluxe Reissue

Remixed and Remastered Relapse Classic to See August 5th Re-Release

Relapse Records is proud to present a deluxe reissue of MASTODON's seminal debut LP Remission, a record that would immediately establish them as one of the most important bands in the history of heavy music.  Exploding onto the scene in 2002, MASTODON combined an unparalleled level of musicianship together with songwriting sophistication that simply did not exist amongst their peers.  Over a decade after its release Remission remains one of the most important titles in Relapse’s rich catalog, and it is with that appreciation that the label is proud to present a super-deluxe version of this classic record put together with the full cooperation of the band themselves.

The album has been fully remixed by original producer and engineer Matt Bayles  and remastered by Ed Brooks at RFI.  The CD cover art has been dramatically enhanced to showcase the iconic Remission horse in a beautiful custom 3D embossing with a UV gloss, special custom varnish and foil stamping.  Additionally, album artist Paul Romano scoured his vaults to unearth 24+ pages of previously unreleased artwork originally created for the Remission album.

The album will see it’s reissue on August 5th (N. America), August 4th (UK/World) and August 1st (Germany/Benelux/Finland) on CD and a deluxe 2xLP boxset.

The CD version comes with a Remission sticker while the 2xLP box set is strictly limited to 2000 copies worldwide and includes a 11”x11” 24 page book featuring the gorgeous new artwork from Paul Romano along with an exclusive etching of the Remission horse.  A special black/gold vinyl box set edition is available exclusively at Relapse.com and comes with a special, full color Remission turntable slipmat.

Future Islands 'On the Water ' Available On White Vinyl

Thrill Jockey has announced that for a limited time, Future Island's 'On The Water' will be available on white vinyl with artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon. (CD version comes in a digipack with 6 panel booklet.)

Future Islands' romantic synth sound scales new heights with 'On the Water,' the Baltimore trio's most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts.

Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC's historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process.

What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys--one physical and one psychological. On the Water's narrator offers enough detail that their story feels personal, yet open enough that any listener can inhabit each twist and emotional pang as their own.

Future Islands 'In Evening Air' Available On Orange Vinyl

Comprised of J. Gerrit Welmers (synthesizers and programming), William Cashion (bass), and Samuel T. Herring (vocals), Future Islands has continued to make passionate music through an electronic medium for the past four years. [Although, the three have been working and performing since the spring of 2003.] They call their music "Post-Wave," taking in part from the emotional fragility of New Wave and coupling it with the power and drive of Post-Punk.

Future Islands' music is spearheaded by Welmers, whose layers of synths and drums create the landscape for Cashion's punching-strum style, that pulses and fights--the two--creating noise and bliss.

Herring, who has been called "one of the most magnetic frontmen in indie rock," finds his space in between. Carving through the music, at times, with a whispering croon, and at others, with a deathly wail.

CD version packaged in a 4-panel digipack with 4-page booklet.  LP version includes artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon.  Currently shipping on opaque orange vinyl!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 23, 2014

DEAR JERRY: You once identified a mystery song that someone heard on AMC's Mad Men. It turned out to be "Ladder of Success" by Skeeter Davis.

Seeing how you solved that case gives me hope that you will answer my question.

When Skeeter and Betty Davis started out as the Davis Sisters, their first record, "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," went to No. 1, which is quite an accomplishment.

Inexplicably, they never had another popular record and are forever known as a One Hit Wonder.

Just how many follow-up records were released by them, if any? Are there any I might even know?
—Amanda Stratton, Vincennes, Ind.

DEAR AMANDA: Inexplicable on the surface, perhaps, but there is an explanation.

Not everyone knew it at the time, but Skeeter (nee: Mary Frances Penick) was the only one of the Davis Sisters not named Davis. She and Betty Jack "B.J." Davis were best of friends from high school, and Mary Frances even lived with the Davis family for a while.

Tragically, early Sunday morning Aug. 2, 1953, two weeks before "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know" made its Billboard chart debut, B.J. was killed when the car in which she and Skeeter were in was hit head-on by a fellow who fell asleep at the wheel. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Skeeter was taken to the hospital with body bruises and superficial cuts, but had no critical injuries as is sometimes reported.

She remained hospitalized for two days just for observation, then was released on Aug. 4th.

The memorial service for Betty, Aug. 6th in Covington, Ky., was said to have drawn the largest crowd ever seen at a funeral in that Ohio River community. Sadly, B.J. was denied the thrill of seeing herself and her best friend having the top-selling country record in the nation.

Having a smash hit made it imperative that the Davis Sisters continue recording, so Betty's older sister, Georgia, filled in as Skeeter's new "sister."

Alas, the magical harmonies perfected by Skeeter and B.J. could not be duplicated. But oh how they tried, again and again.

Over three years, from the summer of 1953 to mid-'56, RCA Victor cranked out a dozen singles, meaning 24 songs, by the Davis Sisters.

Of all those tunes, it is very likely that the only ones well known are "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," and, to a lesser extent the flip side, "Rock-A-Bye Boogie" (RCA 5345).

Though this was their first record for RCA, the girls did make a few recordings for the Fortune label, and while those tracks were not hits they were very instrumental in getting them signed by RCA.

Being held to One Hit Wonder status was not for lack of trying on the part of the girls or RCA. The company issued the following 11 singles consecutively on 45 and 78 rpm, but not a one them clicked with the C&W dee jays:

RCA 5460: "You're Gone"/"Sorrow and Pain" (1953)
RCA 5607: "Takin' Time Out For Tears"/"Gotta Git-A-Goin' " (1954)
RCA 5701: "You Weren't Ashamed to Kiss Me Last Night"/"Foggy Mountain Top" (1954)
RCA 5843: "Just Like Me"/"Show Me" (1954)
RCA 5906: "Christmas Boogie"/"Tomorrow I'll Cry" (1954)
RCA 5966: "Everlovin' (A One Way Love) "/"Tomorrow's Just Another Day" (1954)
RCA 6086: "Fiddle Diddle Boogie"/"Come Back to Me" (1955)
RCA 6187: "I've Closed the Door"/"I'll Get Him Back" (1955)
RCA 6291: "Baby Be Mine"/"It's the Girl Who Gets the Blame" (1955)
RCA 6409: "Don't Take Him for Granted"/"Blues for Company" (1956)
RCA 6490: "Lying Brown Eyes"/"Lonely and Blue" (1956)

Two years after the Davis Sisters called it quits, Skeeter embarked on a hugely successful solo career.

She did indeed climb the "Ladder of Success."

On Sept. 19, 2004, at the age of 72, Mary Frances Penick died as a result of breast cancer.

IZ ZAT SO? Here is one remarkable sidebar to "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know" reaching No. 1.

From the January 1944 inception of charting country music singles, to August 1984, and "Mama He's Crazy" by the Judds, the Davis Sisters are the only all-female unit, consisting of two or more members, to top the C&W charts.

That's over 40 years in what was then a male dominated genre.

Compare that to these 17 all-female acts who topped the Pop and Rock charts during the exact same time period (number in parenthesis indicates multiple No. 1 hits):

Andrews Sisters (3); Angels; Chiffons; Chordettes; Crystals; Dixie Cups; Emotions; Fontane Sisters; Honey Cone; LaBelle; Marvelettes; McGuire Sisters (2); Shangri-las; Shirelles (2); Silver Convention; Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer; and Supremes (with Diana Ross) (12).

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Mono) (Pre-Order) by The Beatles

The Beatles in mono: This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary. The Beatles’ nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, each album will be available both individually and within a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles’ acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY®-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers. Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.
  • Ranked #1 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!
  • The Beatles’ Original Mono Studio Album Remastered At Abbey Road Directly From The Analogue Masters For Vinyl Release By Sean Magee and Steve Berkowitz
  • Lacquers Cut Using Neumann VMS-80 Lathe
  • Manufactured For The World At Optimal Media In Germany, The Beatles’ Albums Are Presented In Their Original Glory, Both Sonically And In Their Packaging.

Via Michael Fremer (Analog Planet) on the mastering process:

"The EQ applied was based upon the original cutting engineers’ notes as well as careful listening to original first lacquer, first mother, first stamper EMI pressings (-1, 1, G matrix). The cartridge used was Ortofon’s 2M Black.

It’s important to remember that the tapes have aged—some as much as fifty years—and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain.

Lacquers were cut using Abbey Road Studios’ Neumann VMS-80 lathe, equipped with a Neumann SX-74 cutter head. The originals were cut on a Scully lathe, perhaps with a Westrex cutter head."

RIOT - Fire Down Under

Brilliant and innovative, Fire Down Under is the third album by Riot. One of the hardest metal albums done by an American band in the early 80's before it went big hair or thrash. The 1981 release finds the band at the peak of their melodic, riff-heavy and hard rocking power. Every song is like a greatest hits album, fast, catchy, with soaring guitars and great vocals. The combination of Mark Reale's Les Paul with Rick Ventura's bright-sounding Strat makes terrific use of the difference in sound between the two instruments. Pure early 80's raunch, just nasty sounding stuff - gloriously thick, tight and exciting.  The playing is flawlessly crisp, which it needs to be at these speeds. Any band can play loud, but few can really be powerful. Many bands can play fast, but few have this kind of energy.

Guy Speranza's vocals are absolutely amazing, full of soul and emotion, a great vehicle for his vocal pyrotechnics. Standouts include the driving opening song "Swords and Tequila," the breakneck, breathless riff of the title track, the brilliant "Outlaw" - one of the best hard rock songs ever written, the catchy, melodic relief of "Feel the Same" and the mighty "Altar of the King."

"Fire Down Under" is one of the most revered metal albums ever - A true metal classic for the ages - one of the top 100 metal albums of all time.

EMPRESS AD - Still Life Moving Fast (LP)

With a history of studio experience, Alex Loring in particular was determined to create the best album he possibly could. The whole band agreed that if they were to fight the good fight for proper musicianship then there could be no compromise. Their decision to pool their money and spend their life savings on the recording of their debut album resulted in much interest but they decided to sign with the label that is home to many of their heroes.

Recorded in the UK with experienced New York-based producer, Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Pelican, Old Man Gloom), the words that keep cropping up are “atmosphere,” “feeling,” and “vibe.” Their method of recording the music live, quickly, and as organically as possible has led to noticeable nuances within the record - details for the listener to pick up on after repeated plays - but, more importantly, it has led to the kind of natural feel to the music that cannot be replicated with a couple of extra weeks tweaking behind the scenes.

The result is a debut album for the ages. With lyrics that focus upon suggestive metaphors for the intangible minutiae of everyday life rather than relationships and lost love, this is a band of musicians as focused upon grooving together as one as they are on their songwriting and being able to relate to fans on an emotional level. Soothing and utterly crushing in turn, EMPRESS AD’s music juxtaposes gentle harmonies with frantic ferocity; relaxed strumming followed by thrash beats, time signature changes and other meanderings that you’ll just have to find out about for yourself.

Jimmy Eat World – Clarity 2XLP Details

Clarity was pressed twice on vinyl – first pressing in 1999 released by Big Wheel Production and then again by Capitol in 2009. The first pressing contained no bonus tracks, while the reissue 2009 reissue contained two bonus tracks, “Christmas Card” and “Sweetness” placed on the C-Side between tracks “Clarity” and “Goodbye Sky Harbor”. The SRCvinyl version includes the two bonus tracks from the 2009 reissue, however they are placed at the end of the album (after “Goodbye Sky Harbor”) which maintains the flow of the original record. Likewise, the SRCvinyl version features slightly different artwork than the previous versions and the gatefold will be matte with a spot uv.

Jimmy Eat World – Futures 2XLP Details

Futures was pressed on vinyl upon its release in 2004 as a double LP with a D-Side etching. The album contained a bonus track called “Shame” which is also included on the SRCvinyl release. However, the SRCvinyl version places “Shame” at the end of the album unlike the original which placed it near the middle (between “Polaris” and “Nothingwrong”). As well, there is no D-side etching on the SRCvinyl version, instead tracks are spanned across all four sides. The original version was housed in a gatefold jacket where as the SRCvinyl reissue will feature expanded artwork in a triple panel matte gatefold jacket with a spot UV.

The album was recorded whilst Skrillex was touring around the world, including countries such as the United States, South Korea, Canada and the United Kingdom.

SOUNDTRACK (OST)- NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the 1993 soundtrack to the film of the same name. Composed by Danny Elfman, the soundtrack was nominated for the 1993 Golden Globe for Best Original Score. The album peaked at #98 on the Billboard 200.[2] For the film's 2006 re-release in Disney Digital 3-D, a special edition of the soundtrack was released, a bonus disc which contained covers of five of the film's songs by Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple and She Wants Revenge. Four original demo tracks by Elfman were also included.

SOUNDTRACK (OST)- THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS

Soundtrack of The Last of the Mohicans by Morgan Creek. Doubl LP. Release on 2014-07-25

Director Michael Mann initially asked Trevor Jones to provide an electronic score for the film, but late in the game, it was decided an orchestral score would be more appropriate for this historic epic. Jones hurried to re-fashion the score for orchestra in the limited time left, while the constant re-cutting of the film meant music cues sometimes had to be rewritten several times to keep up with the new timings. Finally, with the release date looming, composer Randy Edelman was called-in to score some minor scenes which Jones did not have time to do. Jones and Edelman received co-credit on the film

Composers: Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman
Conductor: Daniel A. Carlin and Randy Edelman

SOUNDTRACK (OST)- CHEF

The soundtrack album, featuring a song selection by KCRW’s own Mathieu Schreyer, perfectly mirrors the road trip. For each town, a sample of food and music: salsa-infused Miami to the sounds of Pete Rodriguez, the unmistakable brass band groove in New Orleans with the Rebirth Brass Band and the Hot 8 Brass Band, the gritty guitar sounds from Austin courtesy of Gary Clark Jr. and, in Los Angeles, a West Coast classic hip-hop tune by Ronnie Hudson & The Street People.

SOUNDTRACK (OST)- GHOSTBUSTERS

The soundtrack to Ghostbusters was released on LP in 1984 by Arista Records. The film's theme song, "Ghostbusters," written and performed by Ray Parker, Jr., sparked the catchphrases "Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" and "I ain't afraid of no ghost." The song was a huge hit, staying number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and for two weeks on the Black Singles chart, and brought Parker an Academy Awardnomination for Best Original Song. According to Bruce A. Austin (in 1989), the theme "purportedly added $20 million to the box office take of the film".

this one is well worth the read and the comments are good reading too (kudos to the author (Amy Benfer) for a well written piece!)

Vinyl is cool again. That doesn't mean record collectors have to get all hipster - As someone working in an underpaid creative field and buying too many records, I'm happy to spend whatever I can afford
